Summer Movie Preview 2016!

Summer Movies Preview 2016

A My Movie Thoughts Post and High School Newspaper Article by, John Hayeck

2016 seems to be a very exciting year for movies. The year already had a solid start with box office hits like Deadpool and The Jungle Book, however the summer movie season is only just getting started. There are lots of blockbusters hitting theaters from the months of May to August, and I’ve decided to highlight five of them here that you should be on the look-out for!

Captain America: Civil War

In the third movie of the Captain America trilogy, Steve Rogers and his teammates clash in a debate of whether or not their powers should be governmentally regulated. Captain America claims, “the safest hands are still our own,” where Tony Stark/Iron Man insists, “we need to be put in check.” The other Avengers then divide depending on their ideologies and political thrills and action ensue. Captain America: Civil War is my most anticipated movie for the entire year, seeing as Captain America: The Winter Soldier is regarded as one of Marvel’s best, and the same creative team is back. Also, Civil War is set to be Marvel’s debut of Spider-Man and Black Panther. The film was screened for critics in early April, showing the studio’s confidence in displaying it nearly a month early. Of those critics, 97% of them currently certify it as ‘Fresh’ on Rotten Tomatoes. Captain America: Civil War hits theaters on May 6th.

X-Men: Apocalypse

X-Men: Apocalypse is the movie that could possibly be the surprise of the year. The highly anticipated film is follow-up to 2014’s acclaimed X-Men: Days of Future Past. In my opinion, X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past are among the best films made in the past ten years (with the latter being my personal favorite superhero movie), and Apocalypse may be the emotional trilogy-closer that isn’t quite on our radar yet, but could surely garner critical acclaim and draw lots of attention. Each new installment in the X-Men franchise continuously makes more money (with Deadpool being the most recent at $760 million worldwide), so I think X-Men: Apocalypse could surprise us all critically and financially. X-Men: Apocalypse will be released on May 27th.

Warcraft

Though I’m not personally out-of-my-mind excited for Warcraft, this is the movie that will indicate whether or not video game adaptations have a future in Hollywood. In terms of quality, there is a running joke that there has never been one good movie to be adapted from a video game. However, Duncan Jones (director of Moon and Source Code) is helming Warcraft and gives hope to many gamer movie fans. I personally think this looks like a lot of CGI-overload, but I still plan on seeing it just for the sake of what it could mean for the film community (provided it’s good…). Warcraft will debut on June 10th.

Finding Dory

Fun fact: Finding Nemo was the first movie this writer saw in the theater! Finding Nemo was such a delightful, sweet, and enjoyable ride that it captured the hearts of animation fans (and I’m sure every parent seeing the movie shed a tear upon Marlin and Nemo’s reunion). Therefore, Finding Dory should bear the same level of comedy and heart that we’ve come to expect from Pixar over the past decade. Finding Dory comes out on June 17th.

Suicide Squad

Ever since Comic-Con 2015, when we first got a look at Harley Quinn, Deadshot, and a new Joker, there has been a strong buzz around the Internet for Suicide Squad. This is the next DC Universe movie following Batman v. Superman and it has a star-studded cast with the likes of Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Cara Delevingne, and Viola Davis. The director of Fury and Training Day takes on this tale, which presents a team of anti-heroes hired by the government to do some bad stuff in return for shortened sentences. Few specific plot points are known at this time, however the Bohemian Rhapsody played over trailers seems to make this story of villains appear surprisingly fun. Suicide Squad will bow on August 5th.
