So when I’m not doing a movie review, TV show review, trailer review, thoughts on movie news or a Why I’m Excited/Worried, I’ll just do one of these list type things. Those of you who follow me on Twitter know how much I love TV quotes, so today I thought I’d count down the Top 10 Most Quotable Shows, include a few of my favorites from them and tell you why they’re my favorite.
10. True Detective
Guys, it’s no secret that I really like this show, and maybe I just put it at number 10 because I wanted to stress how awesome it is. Probably not, there were some really cool quotes in it.
“Once there was only dark. If you ask me, the light’s winning.” –Rustin Cohle
9. The X-Files
Though this show didn’t have as many memorable quotes as others on the list, the ones it did have were extremely memorable. In my room, I have the poster of the UFO with the show’s catchphrase (see below) captioned under it. A lot of the other great quotes found in the show are in its humor too, and I’ll do both a humorous line and the show’s catchphrase.
“You know, they say when you talk to God it’s prayer, but when God talks to you, it’s schizophrenia.” –Fox Mulder
“I Want to Believe.” –Fox Mulder
8. 30 Rock
You’ll see a couple more examples of this down the road, but what makes 30 Rock so quotable are its characters, particularly Liz and Tracy. The show, like most sitcoms, had a lot of funny and memorable lines that stayed consistent throughout its seven season run.
“We produce more failed pilots than the French air force.” –Jack Donaghy
7. Sherlock
Sherlock is probably the show with the best writing currently on television, leading to some of the most memorable dialogue currently on television. Sherlock is the super-genius that the audience wishes they were, giving him dozens of memorable lines and John is how we see ourselves with Sherlock, just the average guy, giving plenty of comic relief.
“When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth.” –Sherlock Holmes
“I am not a psychopath, I am a high functioning sociopath.” –Sherlock Holmes
6. The Walking Dead
This is pretty much interchangeable with Sherlock, but the emotion that the characters give when delivering these lines persuaded me to put it in a higher position, even though Sherlock probably has better quotes…
“We’re not too far gone.” –Rick Grimes
“You can lose a lot of soldiers but still win the game.” –The Governor
5. Friends
I’ve given Friends some crap over time, but you can’t argue it set up what we know to be a comedy series today, and provided us with some of the greatest one-liners in history. Chandler Bing is of my Top Comedic Characters ever just for that reason.
“Paper…Snow…A Ghost!” –Joey Tribbiani
“We’ll throw him a soap opera themed party! We can all sleep with each other, then one of us can get amnesia!” –Chandler Bing
4. Modern Family
Like I said, there are a lot of shows on here where one particular character earned the entire show the slot. Phil Dunphy. I think Modern Family is very humorous, but it really doesn’t deserve the 4 and soon to be 5 Emmy’s it’s won. However Phil Dunphy is again, in my Top 5 Comedic Male Roles of All Time. So congrats Ty Burrel, you earned Team Modern Family a place on the list, no less Number 4!
“When we’re standing in her dorm-room saying good-bye it’s gonna be one of the most emotional moments of my life. I’m gonna cry harder than the first time I saw Air-Bud.” –Phil Dunphy
“The most amazing things that can happen to a human being will happen to you if you just lower your expectations.” –Phil Dunphy
3. Community
You guys know how much I love this show, so of course it’s gonna be on here. Not only did the show’s quotes gets millions laughing each week, but they’re also now Internet memes and the show’s rallying call and continue to entertain me every time I hear them.
“Six Seasons and a Movie!” –Abed Nadir
“You’ve just stopped being a study group. You’ve become something unstoppable. I hereby pronounce you: a Community.” –Jeff Winger
“Speaking of days, I never got a chance to wish you a Happy Birthday, or Halloween, or Christmas, or any specific calendar event.” “Well Maybe next year.” “Definitely. We’ll definitely be back next year. If not, it’ll be because an asteroid has destroyed all of human civilization. And that’s canon!” –Abed Nadir, Annie Edison
2. How I Met Your Mother
Another show with extremely quotable characters leads us to Barney Stinson, another one of my favorites males in a comedy ever. Barney’s catchphrases are not only entertaining and recurring, but actually add to the show! “Challenge Accepted” is my personal favorite and has become not only my life motto, but my Twitter header. In addition to this, and I don’t know I mentioned this in my review or not, but as cheesy as it may sound, this show has a lot of heart, especially with Ted. A bunch of his quotes even out Barney’s womanizing absurdity and make the show kind of sad and more dramatic at times, also giving lots of more quotes. Congrats HIMYM, you get the silver medal.
“Suit Up!” –Barney Stinson
“When I get sad, I stop being sad and be awesome instead.” –Barney Stinson
“It’s gonna be legen– wait for it!
“You can’t cling on to the past, because no matter how hard you try… It’s already gone.” –Ted Mosby
“Love is the best thing that we do.” –Ted Mosby
1. Breaking Bad
You guys probably think I make these lists just to put Breaking Bad at number one every time. I don’t, it deserves it every time!! Breaking Bad has some of the darkest and grittiest one-liners I’ve ever heard in a drama, and each one is better than the next. Every episode has some kind of memorable quote, it’s tough to even choose a favorite. I narrowed it down to three really great ones.
“Say My Name.” –Walter White
“If that’s true, if you don’t know who I am, then maybe your best course would be to tread lightly…” –Walter White
“I did it for me. I liked it, and I was good at it.” –Walter White
***
dary!” –Barney Stinson
So guys, those are the most quotable shows from my perspective. What are your most quotable shows and what are your favorite lines from them? Whatever those may be, let me know down below and as always, thanks for reading guys.
And of course one of the greatest tv quotes was:
Cladius: you may not understand because you’re centuries beyond anything as crude as television.
Kirk: I’ve heard it was similar…
