Let me say right off the bat what I’ve said since the end of June: Mockingjay Part One has the potential to be the best of the Hunger Games films. And this trailer has made me even more confident of that.
I loved the first official trailer to Mockingjay (Part One) so much, I don’t even know where to begin in dissecting it. I guess I loved the tone overall.
This film franchise is really doing what the last two or three Harry Potter films did (and what I personally think more final TV seasons nowadays should do) in making the stakes feel believably high. After the sixth Harry Potter, you felt like the world was falling apart for Harry and he was not safe anymore, which carried into Deathly Hallows Part One. That’s the feeling the end of Catching Fire and this trailer gave me respectively.
You really feel like war is coming in this world! In the first trailer, sure, you felt like things were going on, but it looked like Catching Fire Part Two, not Mockingjay Part One. Without any spoilers, here’s what you non-book-readers need to know: Mockingjay is the all-out revolution. That’s what this trailer emphasized and that’s what I thought it needed to emphasize. I think the action in this trailer looks like it’s much bigger scale and will be AWE. SOME.
And oh my God, let’s talk about President Jack Bauer’s Dad in this trailer cuz who didn’t cringe at that? He’s only in one scene, but you really feel like he is this franchise’s villain. The first film his corrupt presence was known, and in Catching Fire you knew this guy was a bad egg, sure. But just from the two shots in this trailer he is in, you can tell he has fully emerged from his cocoon as the majestic evil that this franchise has to go up against.
The shots of District 13 in the trailer looked exactly like what I thought District 13 would look like. I had hoped that maybe the writers and director would punk us a little bit because the District 13 description is very vague in the book. I was hoping they’d make it look really different or something, but regardless I really enjoyed how it was presented here, because you do see more of it. (Side-though: I wonder if this was shot at the same location Walking Dead’s Terminus was shot at?)
In the end guys, I’m really jacked for Mockingjay Part One. I’ve said it like six times now, this has the potential to be the best Hunger Games film if it takes the great parts of Mockingjay and infuses the grit of The Town and the Edge of Tomorrow and Elysium action. That being said, it could also be the biggest disappointment of the Hunger Games films… Let’s hope I’m right and it’s the best!
