Why I’m Excited – X-Men: Apocalypse

Preface

  • X-Men: Apocalypse is now officially less than a year away, which means it’s about time I discuss why I’m excited for it!
  • I’m trying to do these within the year of when the film is released, so I’m not just guessing about it.
  • That being said, here we go!

The Trilogy

  • Think about the Dark Knight Trilogy and how amazing that was.
    • It started strong with a great origin.
    • Followed it up with an even better sequel, and fantastic villain with resounding moral questions.
    • And concluded with an intimidating villain that poses new threats we haven’t seen before, and ultimately tied up the trilogy PERFECTLY.
  • I think if X-Men: Apocalypse is GREAT, not good, not even great (capitalized), but GREAT then it could be, in my opinion, a better superhero trilogy than the Dark Knight.
    • And the Dark Knight movies are three of my favorite individual films ever.
  • But let’s discuss why that is!
  • First of all, the rest of the trilogy has set up for this movie brilliantly.
  • X-Men: First Class is one of the best prequels I’ve ever seen.
    • It kept the origin-story clichés at bay, and made these fantastical icons real people. The humanization of the characters was done remarkably.
    • Not to mention Matthew Vaughn directed what I think is the most crisp, and clean-cut superhero movie to date. It was shot with just enough darkness, yet it also capitalized on practical usage of bright colors that worked extremely well.
    • The story brought these old characters into younger selves in a really well-done origin that wasn’t really an origin at all.
    • It’s been a couple months since I last saw the movie, which I’d have to do to go into more specifics, but First Class set up this prequel X-verse beautifully and crisply.
  • X-Men: Days of Future Past is one of the best films I’ve ever seen.
    • I’m a sucker for a good superhero movie, but this transcended all “superhero” genre clichés.
    • X-Men: Days of Future Past took the rich characters set up in First Class and showed what makes them tick.
    • It shows what made Professor X become who he is, more so than First Class, and went into deeper moral questions about what it meant to be human, and how being yourself is a comprehendible question we don’t confront enough.
    • This movie kept getting deeper, and deeper, and deeper.
    • It blended genres of time travel, politics, action, there was even a heist!
    • It was my favorite movie of 2014 because in my opinion it was the best movie to come out in 2014.
    • It took these characters to beautiful places and left me wanting SO much more.
  • So with those points and mini-reviews being made, let’s talk about why I think X-Men: Apocalypse will parallel Dark Knight Rises and finish off this story impeccably.
    • X-Men: Days of Future Past saw these characters being tested and realize who they were, but I think X-Men: Apocalypse is going to push them to their absolute limits.
    • I think even more so than DOFP we could see these characters plummeting into Depression, and we could see them having to regain their hope and strength, like Batman in TDKR.
    • It could be something that when they all team up (because up to this point, we’ve seen a lot of one-on-one confrontations with just a couple characters) they become the X-Men that we know from the later movies.
    • And that could be quite awesome.
  • And that would make this an X-Men: Trilogy worth remembering.
    • Either that, or they’ll completely butcher the third one like the original trilogy……

The Cast

  • The main other reason I’m excited for this movie is the cast.
  • Some people think this movie is getting overcrowded, but some people thought GRAVITY was overcrowded.
  • Days of Future Past disproved Amazing Spider-Man 2 syndrome, and showed that a ton of characters (including 3 villains and an anti-hero) can be used extremely effectively.
  • Apocalypse, to my understanding, won’t have the original cast back which I like because we can expand this universe into characters like Psylocke or Nightcrawler or even Gambit (maybe…?).
  • I think they’ve been casting the right people for this one, I was particularly a fan of Oscar Isaac as Apocalypse, Tye Sheridan as Young Cyclops and Olivia Munn as Psylocke.
    • Good choices in my opinion, even though the final of which will probably have little screen time.
  • I think that McAvoy and Fassbender could use their on-screen personalities to REALLY work with these younger actors and create a really interesting parallel (showing that the younger kids are who Professor X and Magneto were at the beginning of First Class). Plus it would be great if we saw one or two of them partnering with Magneto.
  • I’m not sure if Wolverine will be in Apocalypse, but I think he kinda has to be.
    • He was the lead role in Days of Future Past, so acting like he wasn’t around for some reason wouldn’t make sense.
    • I’d like to see him have a role in this movie like Rose Byrne had in First Class. A big and likable supporting player, but not too big to steal the attention away from the main guys.
  • And speaking of which, oh my God, Rose Byrne is back for this one!
    • I don’t think she’ll have an enormous role, but I’d love to see her as a side ally of Professor X who’s getting him information or something.
    • She’ll probably be bigger than that, but there’s my prediction…
  • And Oscar Isaac who I mentioned earlier will likely be a fantastic Apocalypse.
    • I was hoping for Tom Hardy myself, but when they announced Isaac I thought he could be even better.

In Conclusion

  • In Conclusion, the thoughts of how fantastic a trilogy these X-Men prequels could be and how great the cast is shaping up to be is really exciting me for this movie.
  • I went into Days of Future Past having not seen any of the other X movies except for the original one in 2000, so I’m trying to stay away from any spoilers and possibly not even watch the trailers so I don’t build it up too much in my mind.
  • Speaking of which, this isn’t even my most anticipated of 2016, it may not even be in the Top 5!
  • I’m trying not to “Interstellar” it where I build it up to much, and then when it’s just GOOD I’m disappointed.
  • So I am excited, though am not building up too much suspense over it.
  • But how about you guys, are you all excited for X-Men Apocalypse? Let me know why in the comments down below, and as always, thanks for reading guys.
