Box Office Breakdown: Summer 2015

Preface

Hello, hello everybody!
So I’m not a huge numbers guy.
I’m good at math but it isn’t fun to do…
But this summer, there were some really impressive records that were set or broken or both at the domestic and worldwide box office that I want to talk about.
Some of them could merit their own individual posts and others are smaller, so I decided to just summarize them all in this ‘end of summer’ breakdown post.
And these numbers are all subject to change, but as of August 25^th or so, this is what we got.
And I’ll have my Top 10 (yeah, there’s a few more than last year…) Most Anticipated of the Fall coming at you guys real soon too.
But let’s talk numbers!

Fantastic Four SPOILER-FILLED Thoughts

Alright guys, so Fantastic Four has now been out for a couple days so hopefully by now you’ve had a chance to see it.
Or not see it? Cuz those box office numbers aren’t looking good…

Alright guys, so there has been a very conflicting road leading up to this movie’s release.
When I first heard about two or three years ago that they were doing a Fantastic Four reboot, I thought that was a cool idea.
They could make it gritty and dark, like every other reboot nowadays and it could be cool!
Then they cast Miles Teller and Michael B. Jordan and Kate Mara, all of whom are actors that I really like!
But then the conflict comes in… Because then I start hearing stories that director Josh Trank is showing up to the set hungover and that Matthew Vaughn was brought in to do edits and there were months and months of reshoots.
BUT THEN, the Trailers drop and I was really impressed with what I was seeing. So they sold me for a while.
Then, only about three days ago, that excitement was once again spoiled with only two words: review embargo.
Fox embargoed all reviews for this movie, meaning no critics could publish their reviews until one or two days before the movie dropped. Essentially showing that they didn’t have much faith in the movie.
Then this thing gets a lot of bad reviews when they do come out, and here we are!
So I go in, I watch Fantastic Four, and I didn’t think it was that bad! I’m not gonna recommend you run out and see it (read the review), but it certainly doesn’t deserve a 10% on Rotten Tomatoes!

Preface

This movie has had 1 hundred-and-one problems surrounding it.
I was looking forward to this movie when I first heard about it a couple years back for one reason: we live in a post-Dark Knight Trilogy era where superhero movies aren’t stupid and cheesy like the Jessica Alba Fantastic Four movies.
- I assumed that the new Fantastic Four would have that new, dark edge to it that all superhero movies do nowadays.
Then I heard rumors about the problems on set, the release date being pushed back, Josh Trank (the director) maybe borrowing too much from his prior work Chronicle (one of my favorite films, by the way). Plus we hadn’t seen any images or footage from the film yet and it’s only 6-ish months away!
But this trailer changed my mind on that.
I thought that this trailer was GREAT.
